Demonstration International Exhibition

MORE than 20 Singapore-based food manufacturers are showcasing some 100 Singapore food products at a major trade show in Paris.

Led by the Singapore Food Manufacturers' Association (SFMA), and supported by International Enterprise (IE) Singapore and Singapore Manufacturers' Federation (SMa), the 22 companies are taking part in one of the largest international trade shows for the food and beverage industry - Salon International de I'Alimentation (SIAL) 2010, which opened on Sunday and ends on Thursday.

Singaporean celebrity chef and author Franck Pontais has been invited to conduct cooking demonstrations at the event. Using Singapore food products, Chef Pontais has created a unique fusion food menu featuring dishes such as Udon Laksa and purple wheat noodle salad.

Held biennially, SIAL is one of the largest platforms for F&B distribution and retail, and presents the largest international food trends and innovation. In 2008, it drew more than 145,000 visitors and 5,500 exhibitors from 101 countries.

IE Singapore said SIAL 2010 is expected to attract an 'even larger gathering of food players worldwide', with IN-FOOD (exhibition of semi-processed food products, ingredients and outsourcing solutions) and IPA (Exhibition for food process) being held at the same time.

Mr Tan Soon Kim, Group Director of Lifestyle Business Group, IE Singapore said: 'IE Singapore encourages our companies to explore growth opportunities beyond their traditional markets. Participating in key trade events in the industry such as SIAL is an important and strategic move to help our players break into mainstream food markets around the world, including Europe.'

Singapore's domestic exports for food have been growing steadily at 8.6 per cent annually over the last five years, amounting to more than S$3.5 billion in 2009.
